CAHR Announces Exciting Studentship Opportunities for Canadian Research Trainees

2009-07-03

The Canadian Association of HIV Research (CAHR) invites Canadian training programs that have been funded through the CIHR’s STIHR initiative to nominate candidates for the following awards:

  • The CAHR Studentship in HIV Basic Research,
  • The CAHR Studentship in HIV Clinical Research,
  • The CAHR Studentship in HIV Social Science Research,
  • The CAHR Studentship in HIV Epidemiology and Population Health Research.

The purpose of the CAHR Research Studentship Program is to support the training of new scientists who are committed to developing and conducting HIV research in Canada.  It will do this by providing students with ‘hands on’ experience in research that is relevant to CAHR’s mission and goals.  This new initiative will be conducted in conjunction with existing National Training Programs that have been funded through the CIHR’s STIHR initiative.  This will ensure that the CAHR-supported trainees will receive all the benefits of the comprehensive training environments provided by these nationally peer-reviewed, innovative training centres.

The value of each award is $20,000 (CAD) for one year, with the possibility of reapplying for a second year.  The deadline for receiving applications is October 23, 2009.  (Late or incomplete applications cannot be considered.)  The recipients of the awards will be announced on December 1.

This note is for students wishing to apply for one of these awards. As was mentioned above, the application must be submitted through one of the designated STIHR Training Centres.

For your information, there are two HIV-specific STIHR Training Centres in Canada. They are:

    U. Manitoba, Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious diseases
    Contact Dr. Keith Fowke: Fowkekr@cc.umanitoba.ca

    Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN)
    contact Sean.Rourke@ohtn.on.ca

Applicants from anywhere in Canada may contact one of the above centres and submit your application through that centre.

Also, you will notice in the instructions that each applicant is requested to submit a description of how the award will enhance the proposed program of training. —I want to explain that what we’re looking for there is a one or two page description of the research work the student plans to undertake during this studentship plus a brief description of the program of training that will be undertaken, and how the award will enhance the research work of the student’s sponsoring institution. (If there are some lengthy specifics (e.g., a study summary), you should add that as an attachment. No limit has been set to the amount of supporting material that can be attached. However, it is best to only submit information that is directly relevant to the application.)
